Roastville Cafe, Marrickville 157 Victoria Rd
This unusual cafe is at the far end of Victoria Street, the part that used to be a bit of a wilderness, and just around the corner from Charmers Street where you will find Bourke Street Bakery. At one time we collectively considered Bourke St Bakery to be a little mad, after all they set up a cafe in an industrial wasteland, that now seems to no longer be just industrial nor even out of the way. This end of Marrickville is now officially (also) on the move with a myriad of choices for fun outings including The Factory Theatre just a block down the road. The only drawback is parking. You will jostle with business and commercial traffic and there is nothing you can do about it because I think Roastville may be here for the long hall.
A coffee roasting machine dominates the back area of the cafe along with pallets stacked with sacks of green beans almost ceiling height and ready to be roasted. That’s a lot of coffee as this is an ex – commercial warehouse and the ceilings are a lofty double height. The industrial chic styled interior is an airy bright space with textures from the wood particle board used on cupboards and walls. Subway tiles give colour and gloss and exposed lighting, plants and polished concrete play interesting roles too. The kitchen and work space areas are expansive and I wonder if they continue making coffee and food of this calibre, if they may need some of that space for more tables!
The central table gives the place a homey feel and is large enough to make it feel like you are not getting too intimate with someone you don’t know.
Coffee is of course a serious business here, and there is all kinds, and a selection of methods to brew your coffee, on offer. There’s an all day breakfast menu and the lunch menu has a world of inventive offerings. Try a Dirty Bird Benedict, crumbed chicken with a sage biscuit and poached free range eggs with harissa hollandaise ($15.90) or fried chicken with kimchi waffles and a canopy of cheese (17.oo). Maybe you feel like being comforted with a gorgeous burger and hand cut chips. Try the Ruben Sandwich with house made corned beef or a soft unctuous Beef Cheek with Celeriac purée, roasted baby carrots and a slab of tender roasted mushroom (19.00). If salad is your thing there are plenty to be had along with an all day breakfast.
There are Gluten free, Paleo, Vegan and Vegetarian choices here too. The counter at the front has house made desserts and snacks including ready to go sandwiches.
Service was smart, efficient and friendly on our visit.

lol I just walked in here today and was so impressed with the space. Unfortunately we’d just eaten at Duliban but have definitely bookmarked this place to return asap.
