When it comes to taking a road trip, you want to ensure you have everything you need for the journey. Whether it’s a short trip to a big city a few hours away, or taking your car on an adventure over land and sea, you can’t go without some rules and road trip essentials.

A beautiful country road

Here are some road trip essentials to make your journey as much fun and as smooth as possible. These fall into two categories.

1. The planning stage and

2. What to pack just before you leave

Plan to check your car before you leave

This is vitally important, no matter how long or short your road trip is.

A simple way to assess your car is to check the tire pressure, and the water. The most essential thing to do before your road trip is to have a mechanic take a look at the general safety of the car. If you are unsure of something it is better to have the car serviced before you get into trouble on the road.

A reliable suspension system is important for comfortable travel, so you may want to look at getting this upgraded as and when possible.

Have plenty of power sources available

A power bank or two is a great way of keeping all of your electronic devices fully charged and ready to go, in or out of the car. You should also look at connecting your car’s power source with a USB connector so your GPS and phone entertainment are easily accessed. The more power sources and banks you have available, the easier it will be to keep everyone entertained especially if you have an older car.

Kit out your first aid kit

A first aid kit is a good thing to have in the car, readily available. If you have one, take a look at it and ensure it’s replenished with anything you may have used prior. If you don’t have a first aid kit you can grab the basics and put them into a zip-up bag. Plasters and painkillers, along with simple disinfectant cream or even a bandage are great items to take. If you want to get more fancy, a pair of scissors and some thick sticky tape are also very handy pieces of equipment to have in the car when you are planning a trip.

License and registration are a must

When travelling any distance, you should always have your license and proof of registration on you. Don’t forget these, it’s the law to carry them. You can put both of these things into your Services Wallet on your phone too. If for any reason you get pulled over or find yourself in a challenging situation, having your license and registration will help you get the help you need quicker.

It is handy to have access to your insurance in case of a problem. The least you can do is have the phone number of your insurer handy.

Get plenty of snacks and drinks just before you leave

My last tip is to make sure plenty of snacks and drinks have been packed. This will ensure you have the best drive possible without needing to stop off so much for extra things. Service areas are expensive to buy drinks and snacks, so plan ahead and grab these revivers from the supermarket before you leave.

Pack a cold bag with crackers, cheese, fruit, and water. This will ensure you have good fuel for your stomach to run on keeping you alert and prepared for your journey

Of course, this doesn’t mean you should drive and never have a break. Breaks during an adventure can also be fun. Pack a thermos with tea or coffee and some cookies and enjoy the view along the way.

What are some of your tips for a great journey?
