Hello. I am so glad to see you.
If you have landed here then you want to know a bit more about My Kitchen Stories and me. Ok then, good, it’s going well.
I started this blog because I love cooking. I have loved cooking all of my life. I can’t tell you that my Mother was a great cook or that she taught me everything I know, because she didn’t. In fact, when I decided to pursue a career in cooking she was horrified, deflated , nonplussed, incredulous and she thought I was joking. I think I was a little bit at first. She tried to encourage me to be a kindergarten teacher but I just didn’t think it was me. Turns out it wasn’t. Each year of my life I have become more in love with cooking. It is creative, necessary and humbling.

Inspiration, interesting ingredients, instructions, ideas, (lots of i words), how tos, food for friends and fussy eaters, fast solutions to dinner and the gourmet soul we all have somewhere….even if it is well hidden like my son Skaters.
Want to see what I look like?.
As much as this pains me I will slip a picture in, because I know you want to see if I am young and beautiful. This I am afraid, is not the case. How can I be young when I have been cooking for (umm) nearly 30 years. Don’t be disappointed be encouraged . What I don’t know now I have probably forgotten, so feel at home, and free to ask questions when ever you want.
I am here to help you. Cooking should be about love and creativity, about giving and about other people doing the dishes…..well that’s part of the dream. If you are looking for shortcuts and packets, I don’t have many of those, but I do have easy ways to make food from great ingredients. I do try to cook with everyday ingredients that you can get easily at a market or even the supermarket but sometimes I wheel out something very special and I expect you to be impressed… Nah, not really , I’m only being silly . From time to time, I too have to show off some of this life’s very indulgent gems. Everyone needs some pointers on the finer things in life.
My Kitchen Stories is also often about travel. My travel and food have always been interconnected in a very practical way. I began travelling in my late teens and have cooked and worked in so many places that the two will never be separated for me. Cooking has always been a part of my connection to people and I love nothing better than to cook, anywhere any time. I love a food tour, a market, a cooking class and a food obsessed friend who can show me the culinary landscape. ( read best cafes)
I am the Mother of a
child new adult who cares little about food that has no chocolate in it. This is a great disappointment (read GREAT disappointment) for me and a waste of good food. I cook and I pack in boxes to take to people’s places, so I can ease the burden of modern food waste guilt. I no longer work in restaurants so cooking at home is an addiction that is no longer satisfied at work. I am single and have brought my special young adult up mostly alone. (Not that I haven’t tried to find another person to help, it just hasn’t happened in a permanent way). The struggle to nurture him alone was the impetus for me to give up my job as a chef. Late nights and long hours (and wine) made it hard for me to function when answering homework questions…..
In order to have a 9-5 life, I was forced to find other ways to involve myself in food. I’ve worked in retail and wholesale as a food buyer. I’ve travelled to food shows to select products and find trends and I’ve filled shelves with interesting cookbooks for various stores. My favourite jobs though have included recipe testing and recipe editing and development. Road testing ingredients and cooking equipment have filled my cupboards with useful equipment and ingredients and I am rather spoilt when it comes to pots, pans and knives. Cheese is one of my interests after working for one of Australia’s premier cheese companies writing recipes and working with food producers in quality control and food labelling requirements. Yep, and now I want to help you. What do you want to know? What do you want to cook? I tell you I love it, I’m here….
My last job was conducting cooking classes for a large retail company…..love it……
What do I do now?
I can be found at my job as the Food Product Manager at an Artisan Italian Food Company. Where I write recipes and social media posts with the products. My weeks are divided between designing recipes for my friends and family and experimenting with recipes and products for the brands I love to write for.
