Hello. I am so glad to see you.

If you have landed here then you want to know a bit more about My Kitchen Stories and me. Ok then, good, it’s going well.

I started this blog because I love cooking. I have loved cooking all of my life. I can’t tell you that my Mother was a great cook or that she taught me everything I know, because she didn’t. In fact, when I decided to pursue a career in cooking she was horrified, deflated , nonplussed, incredulous and she thought I was joking. I think I was a little bit at first. She tried to encourage me to be a kindergarten teacher but I just didn’t think it was me. Turns out it wasn’t.

What can you find here, at My Kitchen Stories?.

Inspiration, interesting ingredients,  instructions, ideas, (lots of i words), how tos,  food for friends and fussy eaters, fast solutions to dinner, cakes, desserts and more cakes.

I also like to travel so sometimes I share that too.

If you are looking for shortcuts, I have some of those but packets? Nah I don’t have many of those. I share ideas, tips and tricks to make interesting delicious food. I try to cook with everyday ingredients you can get easily at a market or even the supermarket.  Sometimes I wheel out something very special and I expect you to be impressed…  only joking . From time to time,  I too have to show off  some of this life’s very indulgent gems. Everyone needs some pointers on the finer things in life.

                                                                                                                                                     So who am I?.

I am the Mother of a new adult who cares little about food that has no chocolate in it. This is a great disappointment for me and a waste of good food.  I cook and try and hunt down neighbours to feed. We feeders have something to answer for.

I trained as a Chef before leaving home to travel and I forgot to come back for a good 10 years working the planet on a shoestring and moving from place to place with my knives wrapped in a teatowel. After returning to Sydney and crazy restaurant life the double shifts and weekend work really annoyed my 3-year-old son, who told me in no uncertain terms that he just wanted me to stay home and cook him dinner. He was right, late nights, long hours made it hard for me to function when reading stories and answering homework questions.

I was forced to look at food in other ways.

I worked in food buying in wholesale and retail, sales and later found my niche writing recipes for product brands, shops and websites using the products that they sold. Food safety labelling laws and warehousing duties also formed part of the growing list of food related jobs along with cooking classes and tastings. My favourite job so far was writing recipes for a progressive artisan cheese distributor.

So, even though my travel shoes were shelved while I cooked dinner for my son, I knew I’d get back out there again one day.

I love markets and pouring over menus in foreign countries. Asking people how they cook things and being thrilled about learning something new are part of the love and creativity that cooking brings.
