I am Very Happy.
Because a really good restaurant has opened in Arncliffe/ Rockdale and I plan to make it there a lot. I need your help. Please go because I want it to thrive and be busy and do really well, and that’s because I am very selfish and I love eating good food.
The US inspired decor and menu make the most of the space, empowering patrons with lots of options. A list of signature cocktails, local Artisan beers, ciders and wines are available with things to nibble any time. ( Warm mixed nuts $4.50, Marinated Olives $5 or a shared platters $18). There are bar stools pulled up to the kitchen bench where you can watch the frantic activity of the chefs. Or high kitchenside bar tables with stools that look out over the kitchen and dining area. The far side of the room has cosy tables for two or more, banquettes for lounging and even a fireplace to add atmosphere and warmth. The back wall houses 3 very huge circular booths for large groups or families. There’s even an outside terrace. See what I mean? You are in charge.
The decor is smart and casual. Subway tiles, wood, plants, steel exposed beams, brass light fittings and an open kitchen. And space. So much space. The fitout is by Humphrey & Edwards who also designed Matt Moran’s Chiswick.
The menu is as free and easy as the decor, with choices that range from small nibbles to share plates and even larger dishes, like Slow Roasted lamb shoulder with Tsatziki and flat Bread ($29). There is a wood fired pizza oven that pumps out thin crispy pizzas with quality toppings and there’s local oysters.
Most dishes come portioned for easy sharing and there is enough choice in price and size to keep everyone happy. I dropped by for lunch, as soon as I found out it was opened and had a hard time choosing. I was by myself, but I can assure you I gave the menu as good a nudge as I could without making myself a laughing stock.
I tried the Cauliflower and Romesco Sauce ($8.0), Crabmeat, Herbs and Avocado Salad ($17) and…..
a Classic Margherita Pizza with buffalo mozzarella, basil and crushed tomatoes. I chose the Classic over a more elaborate flavour just in case I needed to take it home to Skater, who would not have been happy with wild Mushroom Ragu, Fontina, Thyme & Truffle Oil with Grana Padana. The base is thin and crispy and very easy to eat.
At lunch there are also Pannini’s and sandwiches, tacos and special lunch time Pizzas.
The little mounds of crab salad were filled with tomato, frizze lettuce, avocado, chives and a nice amount of dressing. There are tiny fried capers and baby nasturtium flowers. Gone. The woodfire oven roasted cauliflower was soft and delicious and I scooped up every bit of the spicy Romesco sauce. oops. The pizza was a tad drier than I hoped but all the same delicious and after only two pieces I was forced to ask for a box and take the rest home. It may have been the glass of 4 Pines Brewing Company beer I downed while waiting. This is a craft beer brewed in Manly, and was one of around 8 craft beers on tap.
